Assalamulaikum:
After many years in Saudi prisons, where conditions are particularly harsh, it is obvious that the brothers took the position that it was better for them to free themselves... other scholars like Nasr Fahd were put on tv in Saudi to recant as well and later could not stay silent in the face of the House of Saud's kufr...
The criticism of Safar Hawali and Salman Al Awda against Osama and Al Qaeda is common, it is the dominant view, but other things that have been said by them seems to document a complete change in their understanding...
With regard to them, they have knowledge and attained their phd.s in the state institutions so people look up to them. With the jihadi shayouk, most of them were not able to sit through the dry curriculum of statist institutions, and so for those that judge based on degrees, they both have become a mouthpiece for the war against the mujahideen.
There are two ways that you can look at it:
1) they are in the same millat as King Abdullah
or
2) how the mujahideen look at it...
Osama has said that they were invited to Sudan, but refused and preferred a life of comfort... he feels that it is this attachment to dunya that ultimately made them cave in. This is why Muslims should live simple, stay away from extravagence and power, etc.
I prefer this position.... as they are most like the majority of salafi strand thinkers, it is not that they do not knowthe regimes are kuffar, they just do not see that abase exists from which to take them on.
The rebirth of jihad, the trap sete for the Americans, and the developments around the world pushing people back to Islam show that jihad is the way to revival, but only those that can connect jihad to the rise in interest across the globe can see this. We pray that Allah unite the ummah.
